Bio

While Dr. McCallum works across the lifespan, his background includes meaningful experience with youth mental health, developmental and behavioural concerns, and the family and systems factors that shape young people’s functioning and recovery.

Dr. McCallum’s youth-focused experience includes psychological assessment of children with behavioural and mental health concerns, including anxiety, learning disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. His broader clinical work across hospital, community, and educationally relevant settings contributes to a practical understanding of how emotional, cognitive, and environmental factors interact in the lives of children and adolescents.

His approach is especially attentive to trauma, adversity, and system involvement. Dr. McCallum’s research on homelessness, emergency-department use, and social adversity has strengthened his understanding of how instability, marginalization, and crisis can affect mental health across development, while his experience as a licensed foster parent further informs a grounded appreciation of the needs of youth and families navigating stress, trauma, and service systems.

In treatment, Dr. McCallum draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD, and DBT-informed strategies that support emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and coping with crisis-related stress. These evidence-based approaches allow him to work effectively with adolescents and adults who are managing anxiety, trauma symptoms, mood difficulties, and the practical challenges that often accompany them.

Dr. McCallum also brings strong experience in supervision, teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He has supervised psychiatry residents and counselling-psychology trainees and works from a collaborative, developmentally sensitive perspective that helps clients, families, and service systems build realistic plans for improved functioning, resilience, and long-term well-being.
